Instructions to Start and Grow a Microgreen Starter Kit
Materials Needed:
- Microgreen Seeds (choose a variety like broccoli, radish, radish, etc.)
- Growing Tray (with and without drainage holes)
- Growing Medium (hydroponic mat)
- Spray Bottle (for watering)
- Light Source (natural sunlight or grow lights)
- Black tray without holes to cover during germination (to retain moisture during germination)
- Scissors (for harvesting)
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Set Up Your Growing Space
- Select a spot that gets ample sunlight (ideally 4-6 hours) or where you can set up grow lights.
- Make sure the area is accessible, well-ventilated, and at a comfortable temperature (60-75°F or 16-24°C).
2. Prepare the Growing Tray
- If you're using a hydroponic mat, cut it to fit the tray and soak it with water until moist.
3. Sow the Seeds
- Spread the microgreen seeds evenly across the growing medium. You can broadcast them densely, but avoid overcrowding to prevent mold.
- Press the seeds gently into the medium for good contact but do not bury them.
4. Water the Seeds
- Use a spray bottle to mist the seeds lightly. Ensure the growing medium is damp but not waterlogged.
- Cover the tray with a black tray or plastic wrap to trap moisture and encourage germination.
5. Germination Period
- Place the tray in a warm, dark area for 3-5 days to allow germination. During this period, check the moisture level daily and mist as needed.
- Once the seeds begin sprouting, usually within 3-5 days, remove the lid and place underneath the tray with holes where they come from and move the tray to a well-lit area (direct sunlight or under grow lights).
6. Lighting and Watering
- Ensure the microgreens get adequate lightfor 12-16 hours a day. If using artificial light, position the grow lights about 6-12 inches above the plants.
- Water the tray in the bottom of the tray with it holes. Only water when it needs it, or when the bottom try is dry. Do not top water on the Microgreen leaves. Making some fresh
- Keep the growing medium consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging.
7. Monitor Growth
- Your microgreens will start growing rapidly after germination. Most varieties are ready to harvest in 7-14 days, when they reach 2-4 inches in height and have developed their first set of true leaves (after the initial seed leaves).
8. Harvesting
- Use sharp scissors to cut the microgreens just above the soil line.
- Rinse the harvested greens under cool water to remove any dirt or debris.
- Pat dry and store them in an airtight container in the fridge. Microgreens are best consumed fresh but can last for up to a week when stored properly.
9. Cleaning and Replanting
- After harvesting, you can reuse the tray for another batch. Either remove the spent growing medium or refresh it with new soil or a new hydroponic mat.
- Repeat the process to enjoy a continuous supply of fresh microgreens!
